Altus and Chizuko's Webpage

Introduction

Am a Texan who has been working in the Investment Banking industry for 15 years in Tokyo, Japan.

Been an equity derivatives trader for 10 years.  Prior to this position was a Unix SA/Webmaster getting paid to be on the cutting (or bleeding) edge of web technology. My role was primarily:

On top of building apps,  was involved in the infrastructure as well. Essentially, was the one-stop-shop for all our Intranet needs in Asia.  This explains why I've put a lot of effort in the design and updating of this page, as I enjoy using the web whenever I get the chance.

We're pretty much never in Tokyo on Saturdays, as we're out doing something in the Mountains or Ocean. Sundays are usually spent out at Komazawa park skating.

My philosophy is that if I play hard enough on the weekends, the weekdays will come easy to me at work.

Work hard? Play harder.

The primary objective of this page is to keep family and friends back in the USA up to date on what my wife and I have been up to, so unless you know us, you'll find this page rather boring, as I would other people's home pages.

Hobbies

  • Inline Skating

  • rampheel

(back foot grab with heel plant on deck at ramp park in Chigasaki, 1992)

    • Started in 1988.
    • Skated pro for a couple of years for Roces skates.
    • Frequently skate at Komazawa park on Sundays.
    • Favorite skating spot is at Murasaki Sport's indoor ramp park in Adachi-ku.
  • Surfing

  • Surfing at Sunset

(Surfing at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii - Dec 2001)

    • Started in 1980 (with a *long* absence until 1993).
    • Surf spots are:
      • Choshi (Ibaraki)
      • Wada (Chiba)
      • Ichinomiya (Chiba)
      • Shonan (Kamakura)
      • Yugawara (Izu)
      • Tatado (Izu)
      • Kamogawa (Chiba)
    • Used to shortboard, but with Japan's mostly small waves, have taken up longboarding. With a longboard I get more breathing room as I don't have to be in the densely packed line up with the other shortboarders. Nice to be first one on. Only problem is dodging the gauntlet of shortboarders on the way in.
  • Snowboarding

  • (Mute air at Mt. Gassan, 1992)

    • Started 1988.
    • Favorite resorts are:
      • Hatoriko (Tohoku): less than 3hrs from Tokyo. Has *long* runs and *short* lift lines. Terrain isn't steep, but the number of obstacles to hit and jump off of are numerous.
      • Mt. Jeans(Tohoku): In the same neighborhood as Hatoriko. Longer runs, but limited number of trails. Lines are a bit long.
      • Nisseko (Hokkaido): The ultimate in pow pow (powder). Never thought I could get tired of boarding powder. This place has the best terrain and powder of any place I've skied (including the States; haven't been to Utah yet).
      • Zao (Tohoku): Place is big, and the lift operators are usually cool enough to let you do the powder under the chairs if you ask nicely (helps being gaijin when asking).
  • Wakeboarding
Mute Air
(Jumping the wake in Japan, 2001).
    • Started June 2000
    • Great sport as it is easy to pick up if you're a good snowboarder.
    • Fantastic workout.  Every muscle aches for a week after.
    • Best place to do it near Tokyo is at Lake Yamanakako (near Mt. Fuji).
  • Rock climbing
  • Windsurfing/Kitesurfing
kitesurf
    • Started windsurfing in 1983.
    • Use to windsurf a lot in Japan in the early 90's, but is too much work getting parking/good wind, so have since given it up.
    • Started kitesurfing in 1999.
    • Fantastic sport!  Imagine water skiing where you control the speed and direction!
  • Airgun gaming (equivalent to US paintball)
aiming
    • Play with 6mm full-auto 1:1 replica  Marui Electric guns
    • Games are played just like paintball in the US: capture-the-flag style.
    • Tools I use:  SG3 (for sniping; pictured above), MP5-SD5 (for offensive assault; strapped on my back in photo).
    • We play every second Sunday of each month at a private field near Tokyo.  Teams average about 20 per side.  Games are 20 minutes in length.
