Children Special Needs
"Education for disabled children in Japan has been undergoing significant changes. More emphasis is now being placed on offering support in accordance with individual children's needs, while coverage of special educational needs has been expanded to those with developmental disorders.
A new law, introduced in April last year to support students with developmental disorders, defines learning disabilities such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism as congenital functional disorders whose symptoms can be recognized from an early age.
Learning disabilities make it difficult for children to learn specific skills such as reading, listening, speaking, writing or arithmetic, while those with ADHD tend to act impetuously and autistic children find it difficult to communicate with others.
A 2002 survey by the Education, Science and Technology Ministry indicated that 6.3 percent of students in regular classrooms were believed to show some kind of developmental disorder..."
