Travel with Beyer and Adams!

We both love to travel; in fact we met while on the road. We've each been around the world twice and, between the two of us, have nearly four decades of experience living in Japan. We've also both lived in the U.S. and Australia and travelled a lot in the western half of the former and the eastern half of the latter. In circling the globe, we've visited a few other interesting places, too. To see our observations of the places we've been and some general tips on travelling in those places, click on the place name below. If the place isn't as important to you as the mode of travel, having a look at our motorcycle touring page.

Some things we have learned:

  • Plan ahead, get the free information that most national or local tourist information centers give away to get you started and also read a variety of guidebooks both before and during your travels. We like Lonely Planet (especially for Asian destinations!) and Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door best. Frommer's on Rome was also good. We found the Let's Go Europe book to be poorly researched.
  • Whatever you read, don't bother much with their recommendations of restaurants. In most places you can find things you like just by looking around and comparing.
  • If you get too dependent on where the guidebooks tell you to go, you forget to explore.
  • Travelling low to the ground requires effort, but produces greater rewards.
  • Walking or bicycling are the best ways to explore urban spaces.  (Vicki’s guidebook to Kamakura, 10 Temples on Two Wheels:  Exploring Kamakura by bicycle or on foot, exemplifies this.)
