Middle School and High School

High School and Middle School students take swimming class for one quarter (9 weeks) of each academic year. The class is divided into two groups with one teacher per group: Novice (NV) and Advanced (AG)

Flexibility and Strength**
conducted as a group prior to swim class**
eg. Stretching drills, push-ups, pull-ups, leg-lifts, sit-ups, arches, etc.

Novice Group:
  • review of skills + techniques with emphasis on relaxation swimming continuously
  • review of breaststroke **note** a number of students weak breaststroke prohibits them from being placed in the advanced group
  • introduction of more advanced drills with goal of introducing individual medley
  • relays + aquatic games
  • - introduce basic lifesaving skills + water safety awareness **~Note~** - Novice group also consists of several beginning level swimmers (generally new students to the school with limited aquatic experience)
  • Advanced Group:
  • review of 4 competitive strokes - emphasis on individual medley
  • introduce interval training techniques + refinement of competitve turns
  • review water polo drills
  • intro to more advanced water polo drills
  • introduce water polo game rules + strategies
  • further emphasis on aerobic work + distance swimming (once every 4-5 lessons to maintain conditioning)
  • introduce basic lifesaving skills + water safety awareness
