Course Objectives

Listening to and speaking practical and conversational English.

 

 

Course Outline

This course is designed to develop practical English communication skills and strategic competence in a variety of areas that will be useful in real life - from describing the simple past and future to shopping and travel English. It is also intended to be fun! The emphasis is on developing fluency and confidence and therefore in full participation in class activities. The core text will be English Firsthand 1 New Gold Edition. There are also supplementary materials designed to facilitate control of English communication and to develop social discussion skills and self expression. The course requires active participation in pair practice, task-based group work and there is a regular listening component for homework. Each text has a companion CD. There is regular testing - unit by unit .

 

Course Plan

1. Orientation and control English.

2. Greetings and introductions. Questions and answers about students' lives, interests, preferences and experiences.

3. Describing people.

4. Discussing daily activities and routines.

5. Describing things and their locations.

6. Asking for and giving directions + public transport English.

7. Shopping English + English for eating out.

8. Summer vacation homework. Talking about past activities. Use of the simple past..

9. Describing past experiences and abilities. Use of the present perfect, and the past continuous tenses.

10. Times and dates. Making, accepting, and rejecting invitations.

11. Talking about the future.

12. Giving and confirming instructions. Using sequencers and describing a process.

13. Talking about personal events and interests.

 

Grading

First Semester = 50% 7 Text units + Social conversation

Second Semester = 50%

5 Text units + Discussion project
