These tips are relevent whatever camera gear you use.

Read the instructions and try to familiarize yourself with all the features. Set yourself photographic assignments to use the various modes and settings. You never know when you might have to very quickly apply this knowledge, so regularly refamiliarize yourself with your camera's capabilities.

Keep a set of spare batteries and some spare film ready.

Get yourself a cleaning kit and tripod.

Get a camera bag that allows easy access, is water resistant, light, comfortable to carry and capacious enough to take your gear, plus some extras (a packed lunch or rain cape). Put your name and address inside the bag in case of loss.

For SLR users

Get yourself:

a broad and elastic camera strap to ease the burden on your shoulder.

a tripod that can raise your camera to eye level. Ideally it should have a quick release shoe. Buy a spare shoe for a second camera, so that you can rapidly change cameras on the tripod.

Take good care of your equipment and it will serve you well when you need it
