Reaching out for True Conservation of Wildlife

By Hideo Obara, President of JWCS.

Conservation of wildlife is a new attempt initiated by mankind. It symbolizes the dawn of a new development in the relationship of human beings and wildlife in human history. Human beings have long regarded wildlife as resources to take advantage of and have often threatened their existence.

We are an organization with a primary focus on the conservation of wildlife to establish a coexisting relationship of human beings and wildlife in the hope of creating a new category of culture and conserving our natural environment at the same time.

Wildlife has diversified to the extent that the diversity of the world of wildlife itself is immense and the means and practice to achieve the goal of coexistence differs accordingly from context to context. At present, the problems we are faced with both in and outside the country range from those related with international conventions to those limited to certain areas within the country.

Industries, administrations and all types of rights and interests combined together have formed a strong force threatening wildlife and the movement to conserve wildlife. They even employ new ideology and scientific technology.

In this delicate situation, it is our purpose to work out a basic practical theory for the promotion of true wildlife conservation and to propose specific guidelines for practice to the best of our ability. It is, thus, necessary to build up a practical theory combining ideology and specific issues from the viewpoint of administration and conservation activities as well as in related academic fields both internationally and domestically. Our society aims to meet this challenge.
