Endocrine Disruptors

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Yoshinori Sugimura. Today I'm going to present my research on Endocrine Disruptors.

I'm going to cover three points. First I will talk about what Endocrine Disruptors are. Then I will cover what their effects are. Finally I will tell you what we have to do and realize about them.

First what are Endocrine Disruptors? They are terrible chemicals because these chemicals badly influence hormones in our bodies. According to The website of Shimadzu Endocrine Disruptors Analysis Information Center in Kanagawa Prefecture, about 70 chemicals including dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB are suspected to be them.

Then what are their effects? According to The Japan Times newspaper, October 4th, 2001, Endocrine Disruptors are chemicals that are believed to interfere with the hormonal functions of people and animals, potentially wreaking havoc on sexual and mental development, as well as immune functions. In the latest study, the Environment Ministry said the umbilical cord of one of the five newborns showed 2,700 nanograms of dicyclohexyl phthalate per grams of fat. When we haave our offspring, or our children, they may have some handicaps.

Finally what do we have to realize about the chemicals? Please look at the OHP. This slide shows some points that may save our lives from Endocrine Disruptors.

First, "Not to use plastic products, if possible."

Second, "Not to eat canned foods and drinks too often."

Third, "To drink safe water."

Fourth, "Not to overuse an insecticide sprays."

To save our lives, these measures are important. However, I think that the most important things are to understand the coverage of the mass media and to acquire the exact knowledge. If we do so, we can act calmly.

To summarize, I have told you that the fear of these chemicals becomes more for our next generations and some animals and plants may become extinct. However, the research for the chemicals has just started, so studies are experiments need to be continued.
