News Archive - 2000

2000.12.28 Due for release on 2001.01.30 by Collectors' Choice Music is "The Definitive Honeys".

Originally scheduled for release on 10 October, 2000 (and given that about 10 songs from the original line-up have been dropped for this release, the title seems questionable!), it has been revamped to feature three previously unreleased compositions by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. Although these songs were originally used as demos, the quality of both musicianship and production are arguably far better than that of the Honeys' released material. ("It's The Thought That Counts" is particularly sublime...) "It's The Thought That Counts" and "I Love You Much Too Much" have both been taken from the master tapes; "No Bobby No" has been taken from an acetate. Liner notes are by Stephen McParland. Below is the publicity produced by Collectors' Choice Music:

Everything this Brian Wilson-produced girl group ever released - and more! Sisters Marilyn and Diane Rovell and Sandra Glantz nee Ginger Blake were known as the Rovells when producer Gary Usher introduced them to Brian Wilson; he agreed to produce them, changed their name to the Honeys and in fact ended up marrying Marilyn Rovell! Their recordings, very highly regarded by surf and rock 'n roll collectors, have been out of print for about five years, but now, with the help of the Honeys themselves, we've put together by far the most comprehensive collection ever afforded the group, featuring 26 tracks (six unreleased) with great notes and pictures.

2000.12.17 As the year (or century and millennium, depending on how you count...) draws to a close, it must be said that this has been a very good year, with two excellent "analog" books, both still available from Rob Kopp and Stephen McParland, and a "digital" one by P. F. Sloan himself, not to mention the Baggys reissue, and the numerous live appearances. As for 2001, there is already plenty to look forward to:

  • The "Child Of Our Times - The Demo Sessions" (2000.04)
  • A project with Al Jardine (ex-Beach Boys), which is currently underway, several songs having been written for it, including "Catch A Summer's Day" (co-written with Kalinich), and the recent "(It's All For) Family and Friends". Work should resume on the project in mid-March. News should be appearing on Al Jardine's new official website, at http://www.aljardine.com.
  • A 2-hour show at a 100-200 seat theater in the L.A. area.
  • A tour of the Netherlands, currently in the planning stage.
  • Some recent material, which may be made available via this site.
  • The second volume of stories by P. F. Sloan about his experiences in the 1960s.
  • And hopefully, a new CD, featuring some of the new material that has been worked on recently, such as "My Beethoven".

2000.12.15 The Varese CD,"Child Of Our Times - The Demo Sessions" is now scheduled for release in April, 2001. This time it seems quite likely to happen. Furthermore, Varese is in possession of numerous demos, which are being considered for release on 2 or 3 CDs.

Another performance at the El Rey Theatre took place over the past month.

2000.10.10 Stephen McParland's biography of P. F. Sloan has been printed, and is ready to ship. Here is the ordering information:
P.F. SLOAN - TRAVELLING BAREFOOT ON A ROCKY ROAD
NOW EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE MAIL-ORDER FROM CMUSIC BOOKS .....

"P.F. - TRAVELLING BAREFOOT ON A ROCKY ROAD" THE MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY OF P.F. SLOAN

Who is P.F. Sloan you may ask?
He is perhaps one of the most controversial, misunderstood and creative American tunesmith of the '60s! His "Eve Of Destruction" (for Barry McGuire), "Let Me Be" (for The Turtles), "Take Me For What I'm Worth" (for The Searchers), "Where Were You When I Needed You" (for The Grass Roots), "The Sins Of A Family" (solo hit as P.F. Sloan) were pop music masterpieces, as well as inditements on society, couched in the protest/folk-rock idiom of the day. Likewise, "You Baby" and "Can I Get To Know You Better" (for The Turtles), "Hold On" and "A Must To Avoid" (for Herman's Hermits), "Secret Agent Man" (for Johnny Rivers), "I Found A Girl" and "From All Over The World" (for Jan & Dean), "One-Piece Topless Bathing Suit" (for The Rip Chords", "Summer Means Fun" (for Bruce & Terry) and numerous Canadian hits for Terry Black, were equally well-received "pop" tunes of the day, culled from a musical portfolio too numerous to reveal here.
The purpose of this book is to once and for all document the contributions made by Phil Sloan to American Popular Music. Up until
this tome, there has not been a definitive work on Sloan or his musical output, only a paragraph or two, or a modest entry, in various musical encyclopedias. But there is more, as "P.F. - TRAVELLING BAREFOOT ON A ROCKY ROAD" will attest.
Here was a SINGER, SONGWRITER, ARRANGER, MUSICIAN and PRODUCER whose material provided a successful vehicle for numerous other groups and individuals, something many other more "famous" '60s individuals who are still regarded as musical heavyweights, or as creative genii, can not lay claim to. Sloan never professed to be a musical genius or a spokesman of the times. He was simply someone so in love with his craft that it was, and still is, his life. Now after over 40 years of giving,
here is his story, told not second-hand, but with the help of Sloan himself and numerous associates.
The major focus of this work is on Sloan's musical product, intertwined as it is with the psyche of Sloan the person. Hopefully,
some light has been shed on the person, while his musical legacy is presented here in the most definitive form yet attempted.
This 300 pages plus book (with glossy coloured cover) features not only Sloan's story (told in 18 chapters), but a full discography and songography, 12 pages of photos, one colour plate and a thorough index.

2000.10.09 There is a possibility of another show happening at El Rey in December, possibly organised by MCA-Varese. More details as they become available.

2000.10.04 There is a live appearance tonight by P. F. Sloan at the El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles. This is a benefit concert to aid breast cancer research and pediatric AIDS. Other performers include Badfinger, Micky Dolenz (The Monkees), Billy Preston and Bernard Fowler. Songs intended to be performed are "Secret Agent Man", "Live For Today" and "Ginger Street".

2000.09.01 Stephen McParland has just published a new book, "Jan & Dean "In Perspective" 1958-1968 Volume 1". This contains plenty of information concerning P.F. Sloan's contributions to their work, and is well worth obtaining. Further details are available in the bibliography.

Sundazed's Fantastic Baggys CD should be out very soon. Here is a promotional flyer for it:

And the long-awaited "Child Of Our Times - The Demo Sessions" CD has once again been postponed.

2000.08.11 Here is the information sent out by Sundazed to promote the forthcoming issue of The Fantastic Baggys' CD "Anywhere The Girls Are! The Best Of The Fantastic Baggys":

Phil "P.F." Sloan and Steve Barri cut only one album as the Fantastic Baggys, but what a pop-surf gem of a 30-footer it turned out to be! Hot on the heels of writing "Summer Means Fun" for Bruce & Terry in the summer of '64 - and recently hired as background vocalists for Jan & Dean - the Baggys cranked out beach-bound classics like "Tell 'Em I'm Surfin'," "Surfin' Craze," and "Let's Make The Most Of Summer." Anywhere The Girls Are! spotlights the entire Tell 'Em I'm Surfin' album along with 17 additional helpings of rare singles, unreleased material and alternate versions, as well as new liner notes based on extensive interviews with Phil Sloan and Steve Barri - not to mention a peek at the Baggys' private photo stash. Sloan & Barri would go on to pen worldwide chart smashes for the Turtles, Johnny Rivers, Herman's Hermits, the Grass Roots and Barry McGuire, but nothing would ever sound so ocean-drenched and innocent as the material they cut as the Fantastic Baggys.

2000.07.15 Scheduled (once again!) for release on 22 August, 2000, is P.F. Sloan: "Child Of Our Times - The Demo Sessions" (Varese Vintage).

2000.06.20 Stephen McParland's biography has been retitled "P.F. - Travelling Barefoot on a Rocky Road". It contains over 280 pages. The covers are currently being printed, and the book itself should be out by mid-July 2000.

2000.06.18 Terry Black's albums "The Black Plague" (AGEK-2313) and "Only 16" (AGEK 2314) have been released on CD recently by Unidisc Records of Canada.

2000.06.13 Sundazed Records have licensed the rights to the Fantastic Baggys material from EMI, and are planning to release a CD towards the end of this year. No track listing has been decided yet.

2000.06.08 The song "Secret Agent Man" is going to be used in the Universal comedy film "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle", featuring Robert De Niro. It is due to be released on 30 June, 2000 in the U.S.A., and on 20 October, 2000 in the U.K. In case you were unaware (as I was!), "Rocky & Bullwinkle were lovable hip cartoon characters on TV in the U.S.A. during the mid-1960s... and were the pre-cursor to the all the hip child cartoons to follow (i.e. they gave the viewer the idea they were smart to begin with and never talked down to them.)" Incidentally, Rocky is a flying squirrel, and Bullwinkle is a moose.

2000.05.23 The Fifth Dimension's album, "Up, Up And Away" featuring "Another Day, Another Heartache" (Track 2) has been issued for the first time on CD (Buddha Records 74465 99665 2). It has been digitally remastered, and contains the credit "P.F. Sloan - Guitar" on "Another Day, Another Heartache".

2000.05.17 P. F. Sloan has completed a 13-chapter book entitled "True Stories Of India (Search for the Purpose of Life)". This is now available for download from a new section called "True Stories Of India". Feel free to send any comments you have regarding these stories.

In addition, work is about to begin on some detailed stories relating to his experiences in the 1960s - people, places, songs... These will also be available from this website in due course. With Rob Kopp's booklet now available, focusing on his recorded output, and Stephen McParland's comprehensive biography almost ready for publication, the appearance of an autobiographical account is more than welcome. Having waited years for some substantial reading material, the almost simultaneous appearance of these three works is better than anyone may have dared hope for!

2000.05.16 Rob Kopp's booklet, titled "Take Him For What He's Worth" has been finished, and is ready for distribution. It contains a lengthy discography, with numerous illustrations of rare sleeves from around the world, partly in color. It comes with a 27-track CD of solo rarities, spanning the years from 1959 to 1997! It covers different ground from Stephen McParland's book, so it is well worth obtaining. To order a copy, please write directly to Rob Kopp.

2000.04.16 It seems that the very long-awaited "Child Of Our Times" compilation CD may finally get a release this summer, possibly by Rhino Records... legal negotiations are still underway, but the situation looks promising.

2000.04.12 Live performance at the 201-seat Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica. P. F. Sloan performed one song, "Maybe I'm Amazed", to a highly favorable reception.
