Event

1949.02.03 Terry Black was born.
1950s He was raised in North Vancouver, Canada.
c.1963 He began his career by singing on a local Vancouver music show, his popularity resulting in his signing by Bill Gilliland of Arc Records.
1964 Phil Sloan recalls (concerning "Unless You Cared"):
"Terry Black was the "Fabian" of Canada. I didn't really want to write for that type, but I gave him a song I intended for Elvis that I wrote by myself when I was fifteen. We did have great musicians on that session.... Glen Campbell on guitar, Leon Russell on organ and Hal Blaine on drums."
1964 Terry Black won "Male Vocalist of the Year" at the Maple Music Awards.
1964-1965 His girlfriend was supposedly Patricia Anne, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, also an Arc Records artist, who covered the P. F. Sloan composition, "Blue Lipstick", and was apparently signed to Paramount in late 1965 to appear in a movie with Jan & Dean.
1966.01 Terry Black's father was transferred to Los Angeles for work, so the Black family moved to Hollywood.
1966 A movie was planned, to try to make him a teen idol in the USA, with Terry Black cast as Elvis Presley's brother. This project never happened, however.
1968 Disappointed by failure in the US, Bill Gilliland persuaded Terry to return to Canada to perform there.
1969 Terry performed in the musical "Hair" in Toronto. He met his wife-to-be, Laurel Ward, here.
1972 Terry and Laurel joined Doug Riley's group, Dr. Music for one album.
1972 Returning to ARC Records, Terry began a new career as a duo act with his wife, under the name Black & Ward.
1980s Terry performed on jingles for both beer and car adverisements.
1995 Varese Sarabande in Los Angeles were considering releasing a Terry Black "Anthology", consisting of a mixture of both his 1960s material, and some newly recorded songs. P. F. Sloan wrote a beautiful song for this project, which has unfortunately been cancelled.
2000 The albums "The Black Plague" and "Only 16" were both re-released on CD by Unidisc Records in Canada.
