I like American-style pizza but, being after all Italian, I ultimately prefer our version. Good Italian pizza in Tokyo is very rare, and the only one I know which clearly deserves the adjective is La Befana's in Shimo Kitazawa.
That would be a good one even in Italy, and I cannot think of better praise.
I was therefore particularly interested in Pizzeria d'Oro since its name reached me with the best of credentials: my Japanese friend Yoshie's approval. She, who, I swear to god I shit you not, in many ways knows Italy far better than I (she surely goes there far more often), she likes it.
Having eaten there, here I am to dutifully report my impressions to my eager readers.
No more beating around the bush, now: Is Pizzeria d'Oro the equal of our champion La Befana?
No.
I am picky when it comes to Italian stuff because I can tell the real McCoy from cheap imitations, and Pizzeria d'Oro has too much of a foreign accent to qualify.
Is it worth a visit and your money? If you are in this general area anyway, sure.
Now the details.
Pizzeria d'Oro has several branches, and I visited Yotsuya's. Judging from the photos in their site, it's the coziest, but I didn't really choose it: Yoshie teaches at nearby Sophia University.
The pizza oven is right next to the door, and its smell of garlic and tomatoes adds to the not-at-all-high brow, cozy atmosphere. This is a low-class venue: the upper class doesn't like to have fun. Not in public anyway.
Prices are moderate and portions fair, but if you want more silence, more options and higher quality without traveling too far, try Akebonobashi's Esperia. They don't have pizzas, but food is way better.

If you don't understand the map (after all it's in Japanese), from Yotsuya go up Shinjuku Dori until you see a Mizuho bank, then turn left. Pizzeria d'oro is immediately to the left. If you decide to go, do not forget to print a copy of the free pizza coupon from their site.
