O'Connell Boys Club Group is a group based in the North Strand and Five
Lamps area of Dublin. This is an area of the city which has a high rate
of drug abuse and unemployment. The Group manages three clubs, the city
Sailing Club, the City Mountaineering Club and the City Canoe Club. The
aim is to introduce all three sports to young people in the area and help
them to develop an interest in outdoor activities. These activities develop
a personal sense of challenge, leadership skills and group interaction
skills amongst the members of the group.
The City Sailing Club was founded in 1980 and is affiliated to the Irish
Sailing Association. Training is to ISA standards and members frequently
compete successfully at regattas and National Championships. The City Mountaineering
Club was founded as the result of an introductory course in Mountaineering,
Rock Climbing and Hillwalking, held at the National Adventure Centre, Tigilin,
Co. Wicklow. Trainig is held each weekend and members learn skills to help
them conform to the standards of national associations. The City Canoe
Club was founded in 1981 and is affiliated to the Irish Canoe Union Training
courses to ICU standards a re frequently organized. Members take part in
races around the country.
