International
Women in Communications (IWIC) is a Tokyo-based bilingual non-profit group
organized in 1993 to promote professionalism, the free flow of information and
the advancement of women in communications. IWIC's main purpose is to bring women
together to mentor and learn from each other.
We were inspired by the
U.S. organization Women in Communications, founded in 1909, now called the Association
for Women in Communications (AWC).
Our members include professionals
in every field that fits under the "communications" umbrella. Some work
for major news organizations, public relations firms, advertising firms, multimedia
businesses or internet service providers.
Others are freelance interpreters
or translators, website designers, writers or photographers. Still others are
communications students, or people considering a career change.
Our list-serve
event announcements, job leads and articles of interest reach over 500 professionals
of various nationalities, working in Japan.
Word of the Day
The IWIC Mailing List is our
main form of communication. It is free of charge and open to anyone who supports
our goals. Please email iwic AT gol DOT com to find
out more about becoming a member of IWIC.
IWIC members value a network of professional women committed to similar goals.
We meet to discuss professional issues, learn new skills, become better informed
about each other's areas of expertise, and have fun! We believe a sense of community
is crucial to advancing the status of professional women, and to enjoying our
work.
Most of our events are held in the Tokyo area.
