Late Autumn Touring to Fukushima

The tour outline— Leave Tokyo, and drive up the Tohoku Expressway to Fukushima. Ride along the skyline drives to Ura-Bandai (overnight stay), and visit the castle in Wakamatsu. From Fukushima prefecture, travel south along the local routes to Nikko (overnight stay), and return to Tokyo.

Sunset over Fukushima City The first day— Actually, the first day got off to a (late) slow and leisurely start. The total distance of the expressway portion was about XXX km. Being late autumn, we were pretty much set for cold weather riding, and this was the first long distance tour on the blackbird, and the Givi bags. All I can say is, even at solid speeds, the bike and luggage was rock solid stable. A pleasure to ride. About the time we got near Fukushima, it started to get dark, and we enjoyed the Bandai-Azuma Skyline during dusk, and the sun setting on Fukushima city. The Skyline was a really nice road, although it was getting really cold. We ended up finding a small inn that had a cancellation, and the discount was much appreciated.

The second day — Weather couldn't have cooperated more for us on the second day. It was a beautiful sunny day, and we started out fairly early, and kept cruising at a leisurely pace. Continuing into the Bandai area on the Lake Line skyline drives, we passed through some awesome mountain ranges and great scenery, such as the winding roads around Akimoto Lake. From the Lake Line and Gold Line, we arrived at Aizu Wakamatsu, one of the old castle towns. There happened to be a Iaido (Japanese sword arts) presentation on the castle grounds. After that, it was a short ride on local routes to a hot spring resort town called Shiobara. Nice place, avoid it during long weekends, as rooms are almost non-existent.

Sunset over Fukushima City The third day— From Shiobara, we rode a bit further into the Nikko/Tochigi country side, and caught a really nice mountain road back towards the expressway. Again, the weather couldn't have cooperated more, and the roads were almost completely devoid of the normal long weekend traffic that Tokyo is loved for.
