"One hesitates for an epithet to describe a system of writing which is so complex that it needs the aid of another system to explain it. There is no doubt that it provides for some a fascinating field of study, but as a practical instrument it is surely without inferiors", British Japanologist Sir Georges Sansom (1928) Any country which has, at some point of its history, used Chinese character, also has, at some point of its history, evaluated the possibility to replaced Chinese characters with a strictly phonetic writing system. Some did replaced it (Viet-Nam and North Korea), some did partially (South Korea, Japan) and some never carried it out (China. Taiwan).
