The brethren responsible for the planning of the temple in the basement of the YIS gymnasium decided on a size and layout compatible with the perceived future needs of the Craft. The lodge room had sufficient space to permit decent floor work. The interior was designed to incorporate as much as possible of the old lodge aura, perpetuating a building plan that had served the brethren so well and for so long.
The Master's and Wardens' old furniture was refurbished and installed in the new temple. Upholstered chairs and benches were provided to give comfortable seating and support for brethren attending the lodge.
Lighting was recessed into the starry decked ceiling, and master controls enabled proper lighting levels to be selected during ceremonies.
Air conditioning provided a controlled atmosphere, a necessity during the hot and humid summers of Yokohama and the cold days of winter. Yokohama is a coastal city, and experiences its share of inclement weather.
The 'non-lodge' part of the basement area was designed as an 'open-plan' space, enabling a very flexible use of floor space. Fitted cupboards satisfied appropriate needs, and an area was set aside for the Secretary's office. There was also adequate space for festive boards and a refrigerator to keep the wine cool!
