Art Lee and Wadaiko Ensemble TOKARA
Since its creation in March, 2004, TOKARA has quickly become a strong force in the world of taiko, both in and out of Japan.
TOKARA's international debut, a six week coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. and Canada in the summer of 2004, received critical acclaim and sold out many venues.
TOKARA has become known for its electrifying speed, power, and unique choreography incorporating the smooth, circular motions of the Chinese martial arts and dance.
Members of TOKARA continue to research, study and arrange traditional wadaiko pieces and also to fuse African and Korean drumming with Taiko to create a whole new world of performance. Members of the group also train and perform with African, Korean, and Marching-Band Percussion groups.
Wadaiko Ensemble TOKARA is led by Art Lee, a former member of Ondekoza and the first foreigner ever to obtain an Artist Visa to live and work in Japan as a Professional Wadaiko Artist. He was also the only non-Japanese top-ten-finalist in 2003 in the world's most prestigious Wadaiko contests, the Tokyo International Wadaiko Contest.
TOKARA is an experience not to be missed.
Art Lee will also be holding Taiko Workshops in Tokyo on Oct. 2. For more information, contact Michael at naishtut@gol.com, or call 090-8947-3701.
Drum Circle
A drum circle is a group creating and sharing a rhythmical and musical experience. Drums, bells, rattles, woodblocks--even clapping or voice are used. No experience is necessary! A facilitator will ensure that the music stays interesting and fun by suggesting rhythms or changing tempo for example, promoting communication and building fun, group spirit and beautiful music!
