Fujino is best known today for its determination to reinvent itself as an art resort, and help preserve the Sagami River basin from the irrational rush to industrial development that has been characteristic of postwar Japan. Today, more than one hundred professional artists and craftspeople make their lives in Fujino's various communities, and with other Fujino residents work to create an alternative lifestyle to the "develop-at-all-costs" logic of the typical Tokyo bedroom community.
