Daidôgen Free Concert
|
|
At the far end of the sound promenade is an area called "Family Stage," a small open space used for mini-concerts. One of more interesting experiments held by the Workshop for Art has been a continuing series of concerts held here called Daidôgen. The word daidôgen is a neologism created from the term daidôgei, the Japanese word for "street performance"; literally, it means "street strings," an extension of the concept of free "street performance" into the realm of serious music. Daidôgen was conceived by composer Endô Takumi and Workshop staff member Sakurai Michi. A graduate of Kunitachi College of Music, Endô works on the staff of the Workshop in addition to giving time to composition activities; his and Sakurai's dedication to this series of concerts has represented an important addition to the classical music activities of the Fujino Workshop for Art. The first series of mini-concerts was organized and directed by Nanasawa Kiyotaka, concertmaster of the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent Daidôgen performances have included the Ravel String Quartet, Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 ("American") and the world premier of Inne, a tone poem for string quartet by Endô. Beginning August 29, 1999, a new series of concerts is planned, centering this time on percussion instruments with performer Ise Yûichi (3:30 PM).
