Recycling Books
|
|
A number of flea markets and similar local fairs are held each year in Fujino. The items offered are probably little different from those found at similar flea markets elsewhere, but each occasion is a chance to renew acquaintances and engage in local small talk. There are a few unique touches as well. For example, several writers in the artistic community organize a book recycling center, both to stimulate interest in reading, and also to save books from the waste of being discarded. Other artists with a mechanical bent offer services to plane and recondition the surface of wooden cutting boards, restoring them to their like-new condition. Just a few meters away is a place to have knives and scissors sharpened skillfully. The resistance to waste is strong. The last few years have seen a heightening of consciousness about yard burning and the dangers of dioxin contamination as well. The first year we moved to Fujino, we were surprised to see large 55 gal. drum cans modified as yard incinerators being sold at flea markets, but this year there were none. In their place was an information center with this sign reminding residents of the dangers of releasing dioxin from yard-burned waste.
