Fujino was not "designed" for bicycle riding, unless you're into hill training. To get to and from the station, people living in the Hizure, Nakura, and interior Magino areas have to go down to the Sagami River and then climb back up again, not to mention the other in-between hills they have in their own areas. This particular hilly street begins at Kôshû Kaidô in the station area, descends to the bridge Benten-bashi (visible in the distance at left), then climbs back up an equal altitude into the Nakura area on the far side of the river. In addition, the town lacks even a single bicycle path anywhere (hardly any pedestrian pathsor even two lane roads, for that matter. . .), making cycling a rather dangerous proposition. Many commuters own small powered scooters, however, which they park at one of the inexpensive parking facilities (privately owned) around the station. Having said all that, people do ride bikes here in Fujino; I personally have a "hybrid" or "cross" bike which is probably optimum for the mix of roads in and around the town. At my age, its 21 speeds are a downright necessity.
