Love Hotels
Love Hotels

What would a Japanese resort town be without "love hotels"? The area along Kôshû Kaidô from Takao to Lake Sagami is full of places for quiet trysts, including the three hotels seen here.

The old post town of Yoshino had six brothels during the Edo period; after the great fires of late Meiji, the number was reduced to three, and they were all moved to a "red light" district above the Sagami River, just across the river bank (at right) from the hotels here. Maybe the town thought this area was permanently zoned for sexual play, and that explains the love hotels' presence here?

Behind the bridge Katsusei-bashi can be seen the large white "ship"-shaped hotel Queen Elizabeth Sekitei (being assaulted by a huge King Kong statue, not visible here); behind it is the Hotel Royal, and to the left is the Ainein.

The Hotel Royal also has a large restaurant if you're in the area and don't mind mixing with the trysting crowd.
