When we first moved to Fujino in 1994, the town lacked a single supermarket. No great sacrifice, I suppose, since Gourmet City and Kôseiya stores are located ten minutes' away in Uenohara, but that still represents quite a bit of energy expenditure for minimum access to cullinary necessities. In that sense, the opening of the Matsuba Supermarket in 2000 made things a bit more convenient for Fujino residents. It's small, but stocks most kitchen basics.

Centrally sited on the main north-south road (Highway 76) just at the south end of the Hizure Ôhashi bridge, Matsuba's location is convenient for everyone living in the Hizure, Nakura, Magino, and Shinobara districts of town (anyone going to and from the station has to pass it). It's also close enough to the station to make it relatively easy to access by people living in the Sanogawa and Sawai dictricts on the north sides of the tracks. It's even close enough to Green Gables that we can walk or bicycle to it for sudden needs late in the day. Matsuba also stocks the first decent French bread I've found in town. Hurray for them!

Complaints? Well, of course. In a word, its postmodern concrete design doesn't do much for the lake-side scenery, and I think they could use an interior decorator with more sympathy for rural values. But that's just one man's opinion.
