Cock Pheasant
Cock Pheasant in Magino

I took this photo from the front porch of Green Gables in May, 1999. The scene itself, though, is repeated frequently throughout the four seasons. The first winter we moved to Fujino, a family of pheasants, two cocks and about five hens, passed almost daily through our yard as they came down from the mountain to forage. They seemed to be well known to everyone in the neighborhood. We now have two cats, though, and last year one of them, Annie, caught a pheasant chick that had strayed from the mountain. Thankfully, no more baby pheasants have come so close since then. But this year, the cock and hens have begun feeding frequently again in the field above our house. We enjoy the birds' presence and wouldn't harm them ourselves, but we can't vouch for the cats, so we keep an eye on them whenever we notice the pheasants are near.

The lower picture was taken during an early morning walk over the mountain to Fujino's Magino district. A cock pheasant (center of photo) was having his own morning walk through a farmer's field beside the road.
