Sakata Akira Concert "Harpacticoida"

Did someone say... "HARPACTICOIDA"?!

Akira Sakata Jazz Concert
September 17, 2000
2:30 P.M.

As part of activities celebrating its fifth year in operation, the Kanagawa Prefecture Fujino Workshop for Art will host a concert by celebrated jazz alto sax player Akira Sakata in Creation Hall on Sunday, September 17, 2000.

Sakata is a well-known face to the Japanese public, probably because he wears three hats: not only is he familiar to music fans as an important representative of Japanese avant garde jazz, but he is also a frequent visitor on variety television for his skill as a raconteur, not to mention his equally known role as an scholarly author of books on--of all things--"water fleas" (Jp. mijinko; Latin name: Daphnia pulex).

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1945, Sakata formed his first group "Cell Division" in Tokyo in 1969, going on to join the Yamashita Yosuke trio (sometimes known as the "Kamikaze Trio" for their devil-may-care style) in 1972, and forming a wide variety of new groups in the 80s, including "TRIO," "SEXTET," "Wha-ha-ha,2 "the DA-DA-DA Orchestra," and "Mitochondria."

In this Fujino concert, Sakata will be performing with Fabien Reza Pane on piano, Yoshino Hiroshi, bass, and Takara Kumiko on marimba and percussion.

Doors open at 2:00, and the concert begins at 2:30 P.M. Tickets are ¥3,000, available from me (nhavens@gol.com) or any of the other locations listed below. This is a great chance to hear the leading edge of Japanese new music in the intimate atmosphere of the Workshop for Art's Creation Hall (seating about 300).
