Sekisho Ramen
|
|
Who could resist trying a place that goes out of its way to boast of the "worst hand-made ramen in Japan"? An unusual ramen shop located alongside Highway 20 between Fujino and Sagamiko, Sekisho has been operated in this same location for years by the same friendly husband and wife team. Sekisho is a term used to refer to the "border gates" that used to exist to control traffic between provinces in early modern Japan. I suppose it is appropriate here, since the shop is located on the old Kôshû Kaidô just about at the border between the two towns of Fujino and Sagamiko. The master of the house seems to have antiquarian interests, since he displays on his walls photographs (and paintings, where no photos are available) of famous (and notorious) persons from Japanese history (see the lower photo). Aside from the self-deprecating claim to serve the "worst ramen in Japan," Sekisho continues with the border-gate theme by offering a speciality dish called "gates of hell" miso-flavored ramen. Starting at the "Entry" and proceeding to "First Street" (Itchô-me) up to "Fourth Street" (Yonchô-me), the miso flavoring base is spiced with increasingly devilish levels of cayenne pepper seasoning. "Second Street" is about as far into the inferno I'm willing to go. Access: From Sagamiko/Fujino IC, drive east (back toward Sagamiko) for about one kilometer; Sekisho is located at a wide hairpin curve on your left.
