Pottery and Glass Work Area
|
|
The crafts workshop is equipped with hand and power tools for wood working, pottery, glass work (including bunsen burners for melted glasswork and sandblasters for engraving), copper plate printing, and other crafts. Pieces created in the pottery section are left for firing by the staff and picked up later (currently, the backlog requires ten weeks for firing). The workshop staff is happy to assist the novice with the selection of materials and tools, as well as with friendly creative advice. The workshop also sponsors regular instructor-led sessions in a variety of arts and crafts. Prices vary depending on the kind of craftwork you choose and the materials and tools involved, but seem quite reasonable, generally running in the range of ¥500-¥800 for small (500 g) clay items, ¥300-¥2,000 for woodcrafts, and ¥500-¥1,200 for glass. If you have an involved project in mind, it is best to consult the Workshop for Art directly to confirm availability of materials and tools. Also, assuming you read Japanese, you may want to consult the Workshop for Art website, since it provides an up-to-date listing of sessions and prices. The Workshop schedules frequent special events and multi-day courses dealing with everything from drawing to furniture making. NOTE: Do call in advance to see what facilities are available on the days you plan to come. Summer vacation is a rather busy period, and the Workshop reserves the right to close down certain facilities if the crowds get too tight.
