Snow at Green Gables
Heavy Snow at Green Gables
(January, 2001)

Strictly speaking, Fujino has little more precipitation than Tokyo. Fujino is substantially colder than the capital, however, and when it is raining there, it is frequently snowing here. Most of the white stuff doesn't stick around more than a day or two, but when a substantial snow falls in the deep cold of mid-January, the entire town is transformed. In early January, 1998, Fujino had three days of very heavy snowfall in one week, totalling nearly a meter at Green Gables. Needless to say, the chance of this kind of snow, freezing roads, and steep hills makes it nice to have a vehicle with 4WD, or at least set of chains or snow tires on hand.

The upper photograph shows our mailbox after a light snow in early 1999, and the lower one is a wider look at Green Gables and the hill beyond on a day of record-setting snow in January, 2001.
