A bonus to living in Fujino is the availability of lots of direct-from-the-farm produce. Some stands are small, unattended mujin hanbai types that rely on trust, and others are farmers' cooperatives that sell a larger variety of produce, but are always attended and cost a bit more. The mujin hanbai stand shown here is about one-minute's walk from our house, and opens on Wednesdays and Sundays; all items are priced at 100 yen. It's much cheaper than the vegetables at the stores.

The direct-sales stand in the lower photo is run beside the road by farmers in Fujino's Magino district, just across the street from the Yamanami Hot Springs. At the time I took this picture, several hikers were taking a breather here as they waited for the bus.

Even when purchased at the local stores, though, vegetables and other produce seem fresher and a bit less expensive than in Tokyo.
