Tunnels |
|
A: During the thirteen-minute trip from Takao to Fujino on the JR Chûô Honsen Line, trains pass through thirteen tunnels, including six between Takao and Sagamiko, and seven more between Sagamiko and Fujino. Most of these aging (ca. 1900) tunnels are obviously quite short, taking less than ten seconds or so to pass through. The longest one is the second tunnel after leaving Takao; you're in the dark for about two minutes before you emerge on the other side. (The number of tunnels is different going in the opposite direction, two between Fujino and Sagamiko, and seven between Sagamiko and Takao.) The tunnel shown in this photograph is the next-to-last before arriving in Fujino. The orange train is one of the few JR Chûô Tokkai (rapid) ten-car trains that stop in Fujino each day, going from Tokyo Station to Ôtsuki or Lake Kawaguchi. The local "whistle-stop" trains, though, are older blue-and-white six-car models, hand-me-downs from earlier times.
