It is a constant amazement to me that a town claiming to be an "art resort," one that is visited by so many hikers and recreation seekers, could avoid establishing (or providing incentives for a private citizen to establish) a dedicated art gallery and crafts shop—or even one doubling as a coffee shop—in the area of the JR station. But Fujino has managed to do just that, and I can't help feeling it somehow symbolic of the lack of imagination among the "town fathers" regarding the place of the art village concept in Fujino's development.

Until that kind of dedicated facility becomes a reality, however, Mr. Yokoyama has graciously donated a small corner of his drug store to display (and sell) crafts and art works by local artisans. The store-front has even been decorated with the aid of local artists and citizens; the store also provides information about the Fujino area and announcements about local events and things to see. It is located at the Fujino Station intersection on Highway 20 (Kôshû Kaidô), just down the road from the station. Telephone (Japanese only): 0426-87-3907.
