Japan Association of Language Teachers (JALT) - Lots of information about teaching foreign languages in Japan; articles from The Language Teacher journal; and links to many of the world's major associations connected with Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language.

ESLworldwide.com - A very good site loaded with information and links for teachers and students of all languages.

Volterre-Fr - A very interesting web site with a lot of useful information for teachers and students of both English and French. Linda Thalman is the woman who runs it. She also runs Paris In Sites, a newsletter with lots of information about living in one of the world's great cities.

ESL employment - This site has job listings from around the world. Very useful for someone searching for a job in the country of his or her choice.

Teacher eBooks - The world's first educational eBook website. Teacher eBooks is dedicated to helping teachers, and those associated with education, save time and effort through eBook technology. This site sells educational eBook resources. They offer email courses, a free newsletter and daily tips, and networking opportunities to help teachers master change. They also help teachers and other para-educational professionals become published authors.


Books & Writing

Pilot-Search.com - An excellent literary search engine from Pif Magazine.

Marginal Distribution - A Canadian distributor specializing in the distribution of books and magazines from small, alternative, and independent publishers. The company has been in business since 1985 and represents over 150 book publishers and over 100 magazine publishers from Canada and around the world. The books and magazines they carry represent a wide range of genres. Everything from anarchism and anthropology, through comics, conspiracy, drugs, erotica, film, gay & lesbian, occult, pop culture, religion, sexuality, travel, UFO's and Women's Studies. If it's unusual, alternative, strange and wonderful, they have it on their shelves.

Spotlight - A very interesting and useful monthly newsletter that teaches authors how to be effective in promoting their own work. It contains articles written by authors who share their own promotion experiences and expertise. Unfortunately, the newsletter has stopped, but the archives are still on-line.

Broken Rifle Press- Broken Rifle has published two excellent books (Days of Decision and I Refuse) on conscientious objector activity during the Vietnam War. They also distribute three documentary videos (Winter Soldier, Different Sons, and Citizen Soldiers) that capture important moments in the history of the resistance to the war.

Painted Rock - Painted Rock is a community for writers and readers. Classes, workshops with authors and editors, critique groups, author promotion, conferences, bookstores, reading groups, writing chapters, market news, libraries, research university, contests, message boards, author home page listing (mine is listed here), & more. Free and subscription areas.

AK Press Distribution - A distributor (and publisher) of radical literature. Some of the titles may be offensive to certain people, but of the nearly 3,000 titles AK distributes many are hard to find elsewhere and invaluable to anyone researching American political and social history from alternative viewpoints. In the fiction section of AK's catalog can be found works by such writers as Guillaume Apollinaire, Samuel Beckett, Andre Breton, William Burroughs, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali (his only novel), Knut Hamsun, Chester Himes, Jack Kerouac, H. P. Lovecraft, Henry Miller, Marquis De Sade, Iceberg Slim, Gertrude Stein, Dalton Trumbo, and Irvine Welsh.

Recollection Used Books - This used bookstore provides links galore to sites about famous authors, other book-related organizations, research tools, the Vietnam War, Labor, politics, social movements, search engines, and many others. A site to spend time in and return to again and again.

Writer, Poet, & Artist Friends

Charmayne McGee - Author of So Sings the BLue Deer, a fictional account of the real-life efforts of Central Mexico's Huichol Indians to return balance to their environment. McGee, who grew up along the Missouri River, moved to Mexico in 1976 to study Spanish at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende and ended up staying for 17 years. During that time, McGee studied fine arts at the Instituto Allende and taught photography for eight years at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in San Miguel. She also worked as a free-lance photographer covering the exchange of American drug prisoners in 1978 and the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City. She is listed in the 1984 and 1994 World Who's Who of Women.

Alexander Paul - Author of Suicide Wall, a novel about two men (one a Vietnam veteran and one who got out of the draft because of bad knees) trying to reach a resolution of the different guilt and emotional scars they have carried for years after the war. Paul's home page commemorates the over 150,000 veterans--nearly three times the number of American soldiers killed in Vietnam--who have committed suicide since the war.

Diana Kirk - Playwright, novelist, and medical writer. Diana's mysteries are featured on on the New Concepts Publishing Website. She also teaches mystery writing and plotting at the Painted Rock Writers and Readers Colony.

The Trabich Collection- My friend Gene Trabich set up this site to share some of his father's paintings. Irving Trabich is 83, has painted for more than 65 years, and has won several awards. The 21 paintings in this wonderful collection are cycled automatically for the viewer.

Nicolae Sirius - This site contains 27 poems by the Romanian poet & playwright Nicolae Sirius. The English translation was done by Dr. Walter Tonetto of Waseda University, Tokyo. Sirius defected from Romania in 1986, spent six months in an Austrian refugee camp, then emigrated to Australia, where he washed cars and dishes before landing two Australian Council grants. He now resides in Japan with his wife and two children. On a different site you can find the English translation of his extraordinary play Time Weeps.

Paul Kohl - Paul's poetry grew out of the experiences he had as a conscientious objector/army medic in Vietnam in 1967-68. He served as the primary care giver in a P.O.W. camp for VC suspects and NVA prisoners, as well as in aid stations and hospitals. His poetry is powerful. Read it. Paul also resides in Japan with his wife and two children.


Vietnam War, Conscientious Objection, Nonviolence, & Sixties Sites

Vietnam Veterans Against the War - Included on this site is "The Veteran," the newspaper that was the first voice of Vietnam veterans in America. "The Veteran" still continues publication a few times a year and has consistently addressed peace and justice issues. Original articles on Post Traumatic Stress and Agent Orange are still available, as are articles on how the Vietnam War is being taught in schools today.

Emi's Online Antiwar Anthology - This web site, a collection of stories and personal experiences from the Vietnam era, is a must for those interested in the antiwar movement from both inside and outside the military. As the compiler and editor of these recollections says, "The reasons why the antiwar coalition emerged and grew so rapidly are likely to be forgotten unless steps are taken to preserve its story. If this is not done, valuable lessons will be lost--and future generations may be obliged to repeat some of the tragedies we experienced."

THE GOOD WAR: Conscientious Objectors During WWII - The Independent Television Service (itvs.org) and pbs.org's comprehensive companion website to the documentary "The Good War and Those Who Refused To Fight It," which tells the dramatic story of the conscientious objectors who refused to fight in World War II/

SIXTIES-L - A moderated e-mail forum for interdisciplinary academic and literary discussion of the cultural, social, and political movements of the Sixties (defined as the period 1960-1975). Founded in 1993 by Kali Tal, SIXTIES-L has over 700 subscribers. Participation of teachers, artists, and activists is encouraged.

Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors - Advice and support for those facing conscription or considering conscientious objection in or out of the military. Many links to peace and nonviolent organizations around the world.

War Resisters League - WRL was first organized in 1923 by men and women who had opposed WWI, many of whom had been jailed for refusing military service. Through its history the League has remained independent of any political party; opposed to conscription and authoritarianism, censorship and racism in any country; and holds to a non-aligned position in international work. There are many links here to nonviolent organizations around the world.

"By Reason of Religious Training and Belief..." by Karl D. Nelson- Written as an Honors Senior Project at Western Washington University, this dissertation is a comprehensive examination of the history of conscientious objection in the United States. Required reading for any serious scholar researching the subject.

Veterans Organizations & Support Groups - This page contains information about and links to over 60 Vietnam veterans organizations and support groups throughout the world.

Timothy Leary's Home Page - Although he has passed away, Leary's home page is still online and useful for 1960s researchers and others interested in his life.

Country Joe McDonald's Home Page - The man who became famous at the Woodstock Festival for his "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" and the "Give me an F..." cheerleading yell is still alive, recording music, and politically active. Good links, too.

The Old Hippie's Groovy Site - Lots of good links for old hippies, including a section on literary recommendations.

Altrnative Culture Magazine - This is a great web site from Nowick Gray, writer, philosopher, nonviolence advocate, and more. Check it out.

Global Meditations - Excellent newsletter from Barbara Wolf containing lots of information and links for people working for global peace.

Peace Pilgrim - Another good peace web site put together by Bruce Nichols and dedicated to continuing the message of the original Peace Pilgrim.


English Magazines in Japan

Kansai Time Out - A monthly English-language, news-and-listings magazine based in Kobe, Japan. Their November 1998 issue carries a review of my novel Toraware.

TokyoWeekender - A weekly magazine that has been serving the foreign community in Tokyo since 1970. Community news, social events, and entertainment for expatriate readers.
