Mr.
B. Gargiulo
(asst. wrestling coach) tells us: ÒMy
two children are grown up.
Annaliece is 31 and lives in Seattle working for Microsoft. I enjoy visiting her when I can, as I
love the town. Vince
is my 27-year-old son. He just
graduated from RIT (Rochester Inst. of Tech.) with his Masters Degree in
computer graphics and print design.
He is in the process of finding a job... hopefully that will occur
soon. I
live in Sharon Center, Ohio about 30 miles south of Berea. I live in an
old farmhouse on 16 acres. I
enjoy the outdoors and have become somewhat of a part-time farmer. I retired from Berea in 2003 after 30
years. I loved working in Berea. My last 20 or so years where spent as
a Principal of Roehm and than later as Principal of Ford Middle School. Working with and empowering the
students was grand. I
enjoy restoring old cars.... so far I have redone a few old MGBs, a 1966
Corvair Convertible and a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville convertible. Currently I have a 1969 Corvette
Stingray, which should be completed by the spring. I enjoy retirement.
I also collect and sell old antique toys for fun, hobby and sometimes
a profit. I enjoy running and
try to run 3 and 1/2 miles a day 5 to 6 days a week. I
get to Vegas a few times a year with friends and needless to say - love that. Best
trip that I took was to New Zealand a few years ago where I got to sail on
the New Zealand ship that won the America's Cup some years back. I really fell in love with the
country. I also enjoy
Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains. Planning another trip this summer.Ó (Info. as of Oct. 2009)
Then Mr.
B. Garman
(English) lives in the Cleveland area. (Info. as of June 2005)
1980 Yearbook Mr.
R. Gerrick
(German, soccer coach)
1980 Yearbook Ms.
J. Goloboff (guidance
counselor) lives
in Oakland, CA, as best as I can judge. I say this since her full name is
distinctive and details in a biography found on the Internet add up. The bio said she worked for 13 years
in public education as a teacher and counselor. Then she moved into higher education for a few years. After that, she worked as a human
resources manager in various companies.
By the early 2000s, she was a human resources consultant and life
career coach.
1980 Yearbook Mr.
J. Gorsline (math)
lives in the Cleveland area. He
was so good at baseball and basketball while he was at Kent State U. in the
'50s that he was put into their Hall of Fame in 2006. (Info. as of June 2006)
1963 Yearbook
(Only photo I have) Mr.
C. Grispino
(guidance counselor) went back to his roots: his family was the first pasta/macaroni manufacturers in
New York City in the late 1800s.
He learned how to speak Italian and how to cook Italian food from his
grandma. He was at BHS for over
20 years. After that, he started
teaching cooking mixed with food history and culture to adults. He also teaches Italian. Sometime after 2002, he moved to
Florida where he continues his teaching. (Info. as of June 2006, compiled
from various webpages)
1980
Yearbook
2002 J.P.'s
note: Mr. G. knew the
"White Chef" suit was best for his Ohio students since Ohio folks
like a traditional look, but Florida is a cut-throat market for newcomers in
adult ed. Here's his approach: cooking tips and lessons in Italian
language, high energy, and white jump suits all wrapped together.
The Right
Way to Slice Vegetables
How They Say "Your Mother!" in Naples Mr.
D. Habig
retired from the school district in 2001 and had served as a president of the
Berea Federation of Teachers.
1980 Yearbook Mr.
Andrew Habinek
(driver's ed. "road") died in March 2001, according to information
compiled from the Internet. He
was 85.
Mr.
B. Harbison (guidance
counselor) is a representative of the Cleveland Scholarship Program (CSP),
which is a private-sector organization that specializes in helping high
school students get money and financial aid for college. He is assigned to a Cleveland -area,
Catholic high school. It seems
he has been there at least since 2002. By
the way, Mr. G. Croy does the same kind of work for the CSP at another
school. (Info. as of June 2006)
1980 Yearbook Mr.
James Harmon
(math) passed away in 1996 of lung cancer. He spent most of his life as a math teacher at Berea High
and left Berea High in 1977 to be an owner of a small pub in Avon Lake,
Ohio. He retired to Plant City,
FL (the Cleveland Indians training ground) in 1983. His wife passed away in 1986 and he remarried shortly
thereafter. After he passed
away, his ashes were spread in the Gulf of Mexico. Mr.
Harmon enjoyed smoking, drinking, full-bosomed women, watching the Browns and
the Indians, and going camping. Adam
Harmon (BHS '80) is his son. He
would love to hear any stories anyone has about his father. John Pietz will forward the
story to Adam. Mr. J. Hassel (math) now teaches
math at a famous private school in the Cleveland area. His bio there says, "Jim retired
from Berea City Schools after 30+ years. Outside of school, Jim trains, raises, and races
standardbred horses." In 2008, he was inducted into the Berea City
School District Hall of Fame. (Updated Apr. 2008)
1980 Yearbook Mr. B. Hennie (swimming / diving
judge at many high school swim meets in Cuyahoga County; acted as an
announcer at BHS swim meets) He
was not
employed by the school district, but was a volunteer who was a great help to
the swim team and waterpolo team for at least 10 years starting from
1972. He was respected by
swimmers I knew from various years. It
came as a great and sad shock to me a few years ago when I found news stories
on the Net that said he had been caught and imprisoned for preying on young
boys and had been at it for years.
He was released in 2005. To
the best of my knowledge his "other self" did not involve BHS
swimmers. (Info as of Nov. 2005)
Then Mr. G. Hennis (history) was in a news story in his local
newspaper in August 2003. He
still lives in Amish Country. (Info. as of April 2005) Famous
quotes: "Literally!"
and "Have it your way." Famous
class activity: Monkey Races Mr.
R. Simpson (BHS '80) remembered that if Mr. Hennis gave a multiple-choice
test, he would always have a couple of students fill in answers quickly and
at random (like a monkey might).
When test results were posted for all to see, these monkey-like
efforts invariably beat a couple of students who hadn't studied much. Names
were not mentioned, but the guffaws of derision from the students helped us
shape up.
1985
Yearbook

1980 Yearbook Mr.
D. Humpal
(social studies, girls' track coach) retired from the school district.
Best available

R. Hurley
(principal) lives in the Cleveland area. Famous
quote: "You are the Class
of 1980." Inexact
quote: "The best senior
prank will be NO senior prank and I can guarantee you that that will surprise
everyone more than toilet paper on trees." (Info. as of June 2005)
