This joke works a lot better if you know the characters already. Calvin enjoys snow and gets rather impatient when "God" doesn't give him the snow he needs to sled, build snow men or make snowballs. Being stoic is hardly in his nature.
Who is Hobbes?
The first time I read Calvin and Hobbes was in a newspaper. At first, I didn't understand the underlying nature of the strip. That is, I didn't understand Cavlin's particular relationship with Hobbes. I won't spoil it here, but I'll explain lower down on this same page.

Hobbes is Calvin's stuffed tiger. Sometimes he looks like a stuffed toy and sometimes he appears to be alive. Hobbes is essentially an extension of Calvin's imagination. I believe he represents Calvin's Super Ego whereas Calvin himself is largely raging Id.
