Dedicated to Donggill Kim and Anthea Lee:
Throughout the time I have known them, they have been an everlasting inspiration at every moment in my life, from here to eternity.Acknowledgements
Donggill Kim, whom I have known since the winter of 1979, was the man who introduced me to the Korean Gandhi, Sok Hon Ham. He also inspired and fully funded the writing of this thesis, enabling me to complete my MA course. Anthea Lee, my consistent encourager, warmly helped me to get financial support from the Hookerill Educational Foundation, which backed my preliminary studies at the University of Essex. Professor Steve A. Smith encouraged and supervised me tirelessly, despite the fact that he was in his Sabbatical year. Jean Carr cordially agreed to correct my "dreadful" English without complaint. Mary Ingle Wright, my constant friend, firmly supported me and led me to the Study-Travel Bursary Committee of Quaker Peace and Service, which enabled me to travel to the USA in 1991 and to Korea in 1992, in order to conduct part of my research.Byung-mu Ahn gave me intellectual stimulation and motivation both through our interviews and through his Minjung theology. Hyong-Lyol Kim assisted me in my prior research by privately funding me, despite his own economic difficulties. Last but not' least, many thanks to Stuart Morton and Christina Lawson at Woodbrooke, and Yuki Brinton at Pendle Hill, all of whom supplied me with valuable articles on Sok Hon Ham.
Without the whole-hearted backing and overwhelming assistance of all these people, I could not have entertained undertaking this dissertation.
