James was born on April 28th, 1880 and his baptism took place on March 25th, 1880 in Ballintubber.1  James' father was John Flanagan and his mother was Honora Larkin.  His paternal grandparents were Patrick Flanagan and Mary Byrne; his maternal grandparents were James Larkin and Mary Garvey.  He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Patrick, Edward, Michael Joseph, Mary Jane, Eleanora, Catherine, Susan, Bedelia, Honoria and Teresa.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
