With ATSUYA HAMADA - 1982

The time I spent talking with Atsuya Hamada on my visits to Mashiko in the mid eighties made me realize the importance of communication and exchange between Sensei(teacher) and student ... after all I do it everyday.

In just a short week's stay with a notable potter it is possible to absorb the very best that he or she has to offer ... short-cut years of toil and turmoil ... most potters are eager to share ... those that arent't simply aren't worth knowing.I have spent many years seeking out residential courses with some of Britain's most prominent potters ... here are those that I recommend:

Alan Baxter Pottery Ipswich
Seth Cardew Pottery (son of Michael Cardew) Cornwall
Dick and Barbara Wright Pottery Cumbria
David Frith Brook House Pottery  recommended to me by David Leach North Wales
Wolf Castle Pottery workshop South Wales
John Dunn - Raku Workshop  Tokyo
Tomoo Hamada - wheel throwing   Mashiko
Davide and Margaret Frith - English Studio Pottery Mashiko
Euan Craig - East meets West Mashiko
Charlie Odum - Korean Techniques Tokyo
Akihiko Ishijima - Sculpture Mashiko
