Tsu-chan's Japan Page

This page has links which I hope will be useful to English speakers in Japan (and in particular Sapporo), as well as a personal section which may be of passing interest to a few. There is also a slowly growing selection of Japanese song files with added furigana produced in an effort to make karaoke more accessible to non-native speakers..

Personal Section

My interest in Japan started while I worked at a language school in the North of England. Since then I took every opportunity to study Japanese language and worked towards visiting Japan. I eventually got to Japan in December 1995 and spent five weeks staying with friends and discovering the country. Before I left, I undertook to come back to study Japanese, starting before the end of 1997. From October 1997 I have been studying Japanese in Sapporo.

- Five Weeks in Japan (Size: 83k)
I wrote this article after returning from my first visit to Japan (January 1996). Recently I have been interested to see how similar some of my thoughts were to others in a similar position.

- British Universities which teach Japanese (Size: 45k)
This is a file I put together in April 1997, based on the UCAS guide, and modified and extended as I rang around the universities.

- Language schools in Japan
So far as I am aware, there is currently very little useful information on the Web for people who want to study Japanese in Japan. Information which exists on the Web is either so pitifully out of date that more than half the entires are now out of business, or else only cover a very few language schools. Please let me know of any new developments and I will happily link them on this site.

Japanese Song Files Available for Download

The good thing about Japanese Pop Music CDs is that they all come with lyrics sheets. The bad thing is that they're almost always too small to read properly for foreigners with limited language skill, and the kanji can often be difficult. So for all those, like me, who are trying to build up a repetoire of songs for karaoke, I will gradually build up a library of lyrics available for download. I regret they will all be saved in the format of Word 97 (Japanese), because so far as I know HTML will have no truck with furigana. If anyone else has songs they would like to offer up, I would be very pleased to host and credit them on this site. (Some time ago I promised more songs very soon... still coming!)
