What Does Tokyo Union Church Expect of Its Members?
Responsible Discipleship:
TUC believes that church membership should lead to responsible commitment to the
cause of Christ and active participation in the church's life.
Worship is the means by which we can celebrate life in the presence of
God. As we join with others in worship and praise, we are opened to God's reality
and rule, awakened to the deeper meaning of the Gospel, and moved to respond
with thanksgiving for His love shown us in Christ.
Study is the way our lives are opened to change through confrontation
with new knowledge, fresh interpretations, and sharing with other
"learners" in the school of Christ. Witness is a primary
responsibility given to the church by Christ, who call all people to repentance,
faith, and obedience. We are to proclaim the good news by word and deed,
inviting others to believe in Christ and become his followers. Fellowship
is the way by which we enter into that experience of acceptance and spiritual
intimacy implied when the church is described as "the communion of
saints." Fellowship is the body of Christ forgiving one another, up-building
itself in love, so that the individual gifts of the Spirit are manifest in our
life together. Stewardship -- Service is our response to human need in
whatever form it confronts us. It involves ministering to those struggling
with problems and crises; reaching out with compassion to those who suffer from
emotional or physical needs; and working for justice and peace in society.
