HAKONE FELLOWSHIP 25 JULY 1998

Joel Collins arranged a long but fabulous day out to Hakone for 11 young adults. The itinery sounded impressive and ambitious with talk of open air museums, cable car rides, lake ferry rides, good Japanese cooking, relaxing onsens, etc. We met at 7.30 am at Shinjuku Station and got the 8.43 pm train back from Hakone Yumoto. This is our day out....

Hakone Highlights

The Checkpoint
In days of old before the end of the Meiji era, the checkpoint at Hakone was an important series of buildings where travellers were searched and their papers examined before being allowed into the town. Women were confined here and used as currency as a means of controlling power in the region. These life-like officials guarded and kept order in the area.

The highlight of the trip. Some wonderful paintings, sculptures, and pottery were seen at every corner. No stuffy old museum feeling here......
