Outreach and Service Projects

Outreach and Service Projects are the major goal of the Women's Society. The majority of our fundraising proceeds are donated to numerous needy groups throughout Japan, particularly to those projects supporting Japanese women, children and disadvantaged people. There are volunteer opportunities in many of these organizations, and the Rice Project.

Sekoryo Children's Home - This Home in association with the Salvation Army was built in 1984 to provide accommodation and care to homeless children in the Tokyo area. Through the Outreach and Service Committee, TUCWS sponsors two programs - the Birthday Sponsorship and the Annual Home Visit Day. For the Birthday Sponsorship program, a birthday gift of the child's choice is purchased with the sponsor's donation of 4,000 yen. A sponsor's drive takes place each October to recruit sponsors for the following year. However, new sponsors are needed throughout the year, as new children enter the Home. The Home Visit Day is held annually in Spring. More than 15 member families participate in providing a day of fun and laughter for their assigned Sekoryo children. These two very worthwhile programs have been running for more ten years, and depend totally on the generosity of TUCWS and TUC members. For details in becoming a birthday sponsor and/or host family, please contact Reiko Takahashi by phone/fax 04-7185-9589 or Lety Chiba at lety11899@hotmail.com

At the September & October programs, we will be having sign-ups for the Birthday Sponsor Program. Each sponsor will be asked to give ¥4,000 which will be used by the committee to purchase a birthday gift for a child at the home. If you are already a birthday sponsor, you will have the opportunity to sign up for the same child next year. Each sponsor will receive a brochure that tells about the Sekoryo Children's Home and the child that they are sponsoring. Please consider getting involved in this program, as it's a wonderful opportunity to bless a needy child.
