To use an analogy and liken the universe to the human body and the various layers of clothing that can be put upon it: the everyday world of the third dimension may be held to correspond to the completely naked figure. The fourth dimension then corresponds to the undergarments, the fifth to the shirt that overlies the undergarments, the sixth to the sweater on top of the shirt, the seventh to the suit that covers the sweater, and eighth to the full-flowing coat that envelops the suit. The ninth dimension might represent the hat upon the figure's head.
The lower dimensions are completely enclosed by the higher ones while remaining in close contact with each other. The higher dimensions resemble the lower ones but have a higher purpose.
The every day world in which we live is often said to be three-dimensional, but what does that mean? A dimension is a mode of existence; the number of dimensions denotes the directional potentialities inherent in the mode of existence.
