Dark bordeaux-red with an intensive bouquet of cherries and plums, framed by chocolate and spicy overtones. The ripe, soft tannins support a firm body, which lends this red a good depth and velvety mouthfeel. Harmonious and fruity finish. One third was aged in barriques and 2 thirds in large oak barrels.

Another proof of Martin Nigl's skill to produce stylish and clean white wines of extraordinary depth with multiple layers of fruit and minerality. While there is excitement and complexity, the wine, like its creator, remains modest and leaves boastful overstatements to others. Very affordable for a wine which is rated 91 points in the Wine Spectator and the ideal wine to get to know Gruener Veltliner a little better.

A terraced hillside-appelation in the Wachau region with a somewhat unfortunate name when pronounced in any other language than German, this elegant, fruity white wine features aromas of green apples, spices, minerals and, as is characteristic for this area and the varietal, black pepper. Loibner Schütt is a top single-vineyard in Loiben; the soil is stony, a lot of minerals with sandy - clay soil. As with Pfaffenberg, the regulatory influence of the Danube river is beneficial to the ripening process of the grapes.

We may have to wait another century to see something like this: a wine with a residual sugar of more than, not 160 g/l, not 200 g/l, not 300 g/l, but 425 g/l AND it's acidity intact at 8,3 g/l to balance the sweetness. This is a rarity from a small Austrian area called 'Seewinkel' and to get to the 5,5% Alcohol Nikolaus Moser had to keep his watchful eyes on a fermentation lasting 1 year. 800 bottles of 375ml produced. Best after the year 2200.

A golden colored, classic dry Riesling with lively, almost electric acidity. Loads of fruit and a firm grip, brilliant, well-structured and a long and lasting finish. Johannes Hirsch solely uses yeasts cultivated by himself. By extending the time the wine sits on the yeasts in the tank ('sur lie') he achieves soft, biscuity nuances in the early stages, a fuller, richer, more elegant texture and a complexity suited for better aging potential. His wines consistently score high ratings in the Austrian and international press.

Rieslings from Austria are a rarity, hence they are difficult to find in Japan. They are intense, fascinating and well worth seeking out - and affordable. 'Franzhauser' is a steep single-vineyard outside Vienna high above the Danube. The sandstone soil and the south-westerly exposure provide excellent growing conditions and ensure optimum ripeness each year. Here the Riesling grape produces a high quality, pale straw color white with lovely flavors of exotic fruit and a lingering aftertaste of peaches. Remember that Riesling is amazingly compatible with all kinds of foods; some say that nothing marries better with more foods than versatile varietal. The monastery 'Stift Klosterneuburg', a mere 18 km outside Vienna, I may add, was founded in 1114 and has made wine ever since. Should you ever be in the area, visit the gothic church with the world-famous gold and enamel Verdun-altar.
