Rieslings from Austria are a rarity, hence they are difficult to find in Japan. They are intense, fascinating and well worth seeking out - and affordable. 'Franzhauser' is a steep single-vineyard outside Vienna high above the Danube. The sandstone soil and the south-westerly exposure provide excellent growing conditions and ensure optimum ripeness each year. Here the Riesling grape produces a high quality, pale straw color white with lovely flavors of exotic fruit and a lingering aftertaste of peaches. Remember that Riesling is amazingly compatible with all kinds of foods; some say that nothing marries better with more foods than versatile varietal.
