90 PTS ROBERT PARKER, JR. THE '03 CH Bernadotte is a sleeper of the vintage; possesses sumptuous perfume of roasted nuts, cedar, figs, plums, and black currants; lush, hedonistic, sensual personality.
Produced on a gravel soil, the wines of the Chateau Bernadotte are endowed with a solid tannic structure. Rich in colour, full-bodied yet delicate these wines have elegance and charm and a generous bouquet. Like the classified growths of the Medoc, they come from a vineyard of sufficient size and heterogeneity to allow for a rigorous selection, the guaranty of a quality beyond reproach. With this objective, a second selection is made at the time of blending creating Chateau Fournas Bernadotte. The chateau is a dilightful residence built in 1860 and renovated in 1989. Purchased by Curt Eklund, a Swedish industrialist, in 1973, it is today the property of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. |

TASTING: KEEPING POTENTIAL 8 to 15 years The 2003 vintage has a lovely red colour with bright Indian ink tints. The nose is refined and elegant with aromas of red fruit, black currant, crushed strawberries with smoky notes of white tobacco. In the mouth, powerful, pleasant with aromas of apple crisp, vanilla, clove and liquorice. Well-balanced. A long finish. Best between 2005 and 2010.

Manual harvest done at extreme maturity. Complete destemming. Vatting : 12 to 20 days depending on the vintage, at 24 to 28¡C, in wooden, cement and stainless steel tanks. Ageing in cask-wood oak barrels. Length : 18 to 20 months. Clarification with fresh egg whites. Bottling between July and September in the second year following the harvest.
Its colour is unusually deep ; blue-black in its youth. Its aromas take time to reveal themselves, but contain a rich concentration of cassis and blackberries, with notes of smoked oak and havana tobacco that come through with ageing. A similar level of complexity is to be found on the palate, thanks to masterful winemaking : spice, mint and mineral notes accompany a fabulously rich fruit. |

| The wine, a brilliant and deep red with a cherry tint, is young on the nose, refined and fresh, elegantly revealing floral notes (peony, rose) together with touches of candied orange peel, caramel and cocoa. Round on the palate, with velvety tannins of great refinement and distinction, it displays a minty freshness and all the complexity of intense flavours in which liquorice and blackcurrant mingle with spicy notes of pepper and cinnamon. The ample, rich and creamy finish lingers elegantly in the mouth, brilliantly combining the delicacy of refined oak with the complexity of flavours produced by the different varieties. |
