The Gods of the Katori Shrine: Futsunushi-no-Okami
Alias: Iwainushi-no-Okami
History of the Katori Shrine:
Before Tenson (a grandson of the greater god Amaterasu-Omikami) came down
to Izumo (Japan) from heaven, Amaterasu-Omikami ordered Futsunushi-no-Okami
and Takemikazuchi-no-Okami to come doun and negotiate with Okuninushi-no-mikoto
to hand over this area to Koson (also a grandson of amaterasu-Omikami)
. They made peace, and built the foundation of this country.
Futsunushi-no-Okami is the God associated most with bravery. He is worshipped
as the God of Martial Arts, and also for the development of the good fortune
of the country, for business guidance, as a sea guardian, for the bonds
of marriage, and for easy delivery during childbirth.
IN the record
of Kasaimikuriya (Eiman Gannen - AD 265) and the supplemental writings
of Kasaimikuriya (Keisei 5 - AD 1398 ) , there are listed the names of
the villages where this shrine governed and the story of the six families
who moved from Katorigun, Chiba for the development of this area, froming
the village of Omurai. It also speaks of the local God of Omurai around
the end of the Heian Period.
Until about Taisho 5, there was a circle-shaped forest with aged trees.
birds, racoons, and their nests. By the time of Meiji 43, there was the
Omurai pram garden neardy and it became a place to enjoy the four seasons.
The existing shrine was built in Showa 29. The main buildind was constructed
in the Nagare-zukuri style. A sanctuary built in the Irimoyanagare-zukuri
style was made using Japanese cypress.
