E-mail addresses

Here's an example of an e-mail address similar to my students' addresses:

    985555@asojuku.ac.jp

What does each part mean? Read this:

    jp

    This person is in Japan.

    ac

"ac" means "academic". This person is at a school.

    asojuku

This is the server name. I know "ac" means school, so I now know that the school's server name is "asojuku".

    985555

This is the user name. The "user" is a person.
Here's an example of another e-mail address; it's my address:

    billp@gol.com

What does each part mean? Read this:

    com

"com" means "commercial" -- in other words, the person gets their e-mail address from a company. Most (but not all) "com" addresses are in the USA. You pronounce this the same way you pronounce the first part of the word "comment".

    gol

This is the server name. I know "com" means commercial, so I now know that the company's name is "GOL".

    billp

This is the user name. The "user" is a person.
