| Alaska Highway/アラスカハイウェイ (2004.05-2004.06)  I departed my father's place on May 6 after spending a few weeks preparing the bike. I have never really thought of the Canadian border as a *real* border, but I was corrected on that just two hours after departing Seattle. I gave some vague answers to how long I would be in Canada and what route I was taking to Alaska, prompting them to give me a more thorough inspection than usual. Then didn't have any reason to hold me, so a few minutes later I was back on the road. Once through the border, though, the biggest differences I saw between the U.S.A. and Canada were the color of the money and the metric units. The first day I visited an acquaintance in Vancouver city. Later I spent three days on Vancouver Island. (Vancouver city and Vancouver Island are different places. The northwest even has a Vancouver in Washington state, making things a bit confusing). After returning to the mainland, I visited a hot spring 40 km down a logging road north of Vancouver. I was only intending to spend the day there, but a couple from Vancouver gave me the food and beer I would need to stay two days! My original plan was to go to Banff and other places in the Canadian Rockies. But there was still snow there, so I decided to head up to Alaska first. I went up the 2,500 km Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek to Fairbanks with no real problems. I only had one day of rain on the entire trip through the green northland! I wanted to go up the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay, the farthest north you can get by road in North America, but the rough road really hurt my shoulder I injured last year. So, I turned around at the Yukon River. Instead of freezing at Prudhoe Bay, I spent the next day relaxing at Chena Hot Springs. Afterwards I passed by the Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, on my way to Anchorage. There I encountered my first heavy traffic in a long time! From Anchorage I went around the Kenai peninsula and its amazing scenery. I got a treat of glaciers and whales to top off the mountains and the sea. The Top of the World highway through the town of Chicken Alaska (a total of four buildings including the outhouse) took me to Dawson City in Canada. Dawson City had a population of more than 40,000 in the gold rush, but only a few hundred in the summer now--mostly tourists. A few days after Dawson City, I was in Haines to get on the high-speed ferry to Juneau, the capitol of Alaska. I saw pretty much all there is to see in Juneau that afternoon, and was on the midnight ferry down to Seattle. The three days on the ferry was hardly boring. I got to visit some scenery and visit some islands that are not on the ordinary tourist run. The ferry arrived closer to the Canadian border than to my father's house, so I went to see the couple I met at the first hot springs I visited. This time I was ready answer any questions asked at the border, but most of the questions were about the performance of my motorcycle!!     シアトルの父の家でバイクの準備してから、５月６日にアラスカへ向かって出発しました。アメリカとカナダの国境は「本当の」国境だという認識が薄いため、旅を開始してからわずか２時間で初「トラブル」になりました。何日間カナダに滞在するかやどのルートでアラスカに行くかと聞かれたけれど、僕の答えがかなり曖昧だったから、バイクを降りて二次検査にいかなてはなりませんでした！まあ、不法行為はしていなかったからすぐ解放されたけど、カナダとアメリカは別の国だと改めて認識しました。確かに、国境を超えたらお金の色は違うし、カナダはマイル、ガロンではなく、キロメーター、リトルだ。 最初にバンクーバー市の知人の家に寄ってから３日間バンクーバー島に行きました。（バンクーバー市とバンクーバー島は全く別々の所です。ちなみにワシントン州にもバンクーバーという町もあります。この地域でVancouverの話をするなら、どのVancouverかをはっきりしなくてはならない！）。本土に戻ってから片道４０キロの林道の奥にある温泉に立ち寄りました。日帰りのつもりだったけど現地の人が食料とビールを恵んでくれたから結局２泊してしまいました！ アラスカに北上する前にカナダのロッキー山脈に行く予定だったけど、バンフ等でまだ雪が降っていたから先にアラスカに向かいました。カナダのドーソン・クリークからアラスカのフェアバンクスまで２５００キロのアラスカ・ハイウェイを快走しました。緑が多い北の大地では一ヶ月に一日しか雨に降られませんでした！ 当初、（道路で行ける）北米最北端のプルドー・ベイに挑戦するつもりだったが、行ってみると悪路で去年怪我した肩が痛くてユーコン川に着いた時に最北端を断念しました。代わりに近くのチェナ温泉で一日静養しました。 その後、北米最高峰のミキンリー山があるデナリ公園経由でアラスカ最大の都市アンカレッジに行きました。交通量が急に増えて久しぶりの渋滞に遭いました！ アンカレッジから近くのケナイ半島の絶景に圧倒されました。ケナイ半島では美しい海と山はもちろん、氷河とイルカをも間近くに見ることができました。 トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド・ハイウェイで「チキン」という町（と言っても野外トイレを含めて建物は４つしかない）を経由して、ゴールドラッシュ時に４万人の町だったドーソン・シティーに足を伸ばした。現在夏に数百人しかいません。その多くは観光客。 数日後、ヘインズから高速フェリーで首都のジュノーを訪れました。一日で見るものは見て、深夜にシアトル行きのフェリーに乗りました。３日間の船旅だったが決して退屈ではありませんでした。めったに見ることのできない風景と、離島にある町が見えました。 フェリーが着岸する所は父の家よりカナダのバンクーバー（町の方）に近いので、帰る前に最初の温泉で会った夫婦の所に寄ってみました。今度は国境で聞かれるあり得る答えをすべて事前に考えましたが、結局聞かれた事は殆どバイクの性能等の世間話しでした！ |
