ダービーのカップ・シェイプに新たな発見はあるか？
第2回 カップ・シェイプの名称を洗い出す
さて、前回はNew Embossedと呼ばれていたシェイプの正体を追いましたが、今回からは、その他全てのカップ・シェイプ扱います。まずは、18世紀当時にどのような名称のシェイプが存在していたのかを文献から洗い出してみます。一番役に立つのは、1785年3月にダービーのロンドン店舗で開催された即売会のカタログでしょう。クリスティーズのカタログと違って、販売作品についての記述が詳しく、具体的なシェイプ名がいくつも記載されているからです。この即売会では2日間で全198ロットが販売されました（注１）。その中から、カップ・シェイプに関する記載があるものを全て抜き出してみます。

以上の中からシェイプの名称のみ書き出して若干整理すると、以下のとおりです。
(1) double shape
(2) Devonshire shape
(3) fluted、small flute、small waved flute
(4) plain shape
(5) handled cups
(6) French shape
(7) plain shanked、waved shanked
(8) new shape
(9) new embossed
(10) peacock pattern
(11) bell-shape
これ以外に、前回new embossedを調査する中で出てきた名称として次のものがありますので加えておきます。
(12) Hamilton shape
以上でリストアップした名称を基に、少し考えてみます。
(1) double shape
頻繁に登場する名称です。上記1785年の即売会カタログでも真っ先に出てきて、ティーセットとコードルカップ双方で使われたシェイプということです。しかし、何が「ダブル」なのでしょうか。サイズが大きいということでしょうか？取っ手が2つなのでしょうか？ずっと悩んでいたのですが、1787年のベッドフォード公爵(Duke of Bedford)への販売に関する記録の中に、一つのヒントを見つけました。公爵は外国から持ち帰ったブレックファースト・カップと同型のものを欲しがって、ダービーに注文を出したのです。関連する記述を以下に記載します。
1787年2月6日 リゴからデュズベリーへの手紙
On Saturday I was again at the Duke of Bedford with all our pattern of Breakfast China （中略）. His Grace likewise gave me the pattern Cup & Saucer which he so much admires the form of (except the Saucers not to be made so deep as the pattern) I think we have made this formd Cup & Saucer before for Lady Torrington about the year 85 or 86, you had better be forwarding some in the white against the order is gave, and loose no time in forwarding the pattern mentioned, if you was to do it on one of our Double Shape Caudle Cups it would come the nearest to the shape of his Grace's pattern of anything we have.
外国製のカップ（ブレックファースト・カップ）ですから、全く同型というものはないわけですが、1785年か86年に同じようなものを作ったことがあり、今ある中では「ダブル・シェイプ」のコードル・カップが一番似ている、という内容です。
そして、同公爵への最終的な販売記録は、以下のようになっています。

ということは、ダブル・シェイプはベル・シェイプの類型だということになります。ベル・シェイプは、以下の(11)でも登場しますが、比較的想像しやすい形状です。釣鐘のように、側面が波打つ形でしょうか。それに似ているということですね。カップの上下に段差があって二重の形になっているのが名称の由来ということでしょうか。もしそれが正しいなら、候補はいっきに絞られてきます。

(2) Devonshire shape
これも結構頻繁に登場するシェイプです。人名か地名に由来するものでしょうか。少し調べてみると、当時のデヴォンシャー公爵5世及び公爵妃はダービーの上顧客だったとのことです。政治力・財力ともに抜群だった同公爵家なら、お買い上げいただいた作品のシェイプにその名を頂戴した、ということも十分考えられるでしょう。しかし、わざわざ名前を冠して呼ぶシェイプとなると、縞模様などとは違い、簡単には形容できないような特徴のある形状なのかなという感じがします。
ちなみに、同公爵家の居城であるチャツワース(Chatsworth)は、ダービーシャー州にある英国屈指の大邸宅（注２）で、現在では、家財などのコレクションも含めて基金の下で管理されています。もちろんウェブサイトもあります。ロイヤル・コレクションと同じような感じです。問い合わせれば、ダービーのティーセットが出てくるかもしれません。でも、サイトに載っている歴史を読むと、相続税や邸宅の維持管理費を捻出するために何度もコレクションが売却されているようなので、これまたロイヤル・コレクションに問い合わせたときと同じ経緯をたどることになるかもしれません。（ここまで来たら、あきらめずに問い合わせだけはしてみることにしようと思いますが。）
(3) fluted、small flute、small waved flute
縞模様のバリエーションです。大きな縞か小さな縞か、真直ぐな縞か波打つ縞かということでしょう。これは常識的に判断できるシェイプですね。（本当にそうだといいですが。）

(4) plain shape
縞模様もなければ浮彫りもない、表面が平らなカップを指すのだろうとは思いますが...
(5) handled cups
取っ手があるかないかは、例えばティーカップかティーボウルかの違いであって、シェイプの違いではないかもしれません。でも、わざわざ「取っ手つき」と書くからには、取っ手がないのが基本形だからなのかもしれません。例えば、上記(5)のplain shapeというのは実は取っ手のないカップを指しており、取っ手がある場合はhandled cupsと記述した、と考えることもできるのではないでしょうか。
(6) French shape
このシェイプは（珍しく）既に判明しています。チョコレートカップで、スタンドに深い窪みがあり、カップ下部がその窪みにすっぽりと入るようになっています。セーヴルのシェイプから取ったものであることが、この名称の由来です。なお、スタンドの窪みには浅いものと深いものの2種類があるようです（下の写真は深い方の作例です）。また、取っ手は幾種類もの形状のものが使用されています。

(7) plain shanked、waved shanked
Shankedというのはひねり縞を指すというのが私の理解です。plain shankedというのは、ひねり縞以外に何も模様がないシェイプということでしょうか。でも、waved shanked（波打つひねり縞）というのは、もともとひねってあるものを波打たせるとは、どんな縞模様でしょうか。上記(3)のsmall waved fluteの候補として写真を載せたシェイプも、もしかしたらshankedの一種に入るのかもしれません。fluted、shankedという２つのシェイプのヴァリエーションとして、ともに"waved"というものがあるわけですが（small waved fluteとwaved shanked)、このwavedが何を指すのかがポイントになりそうな気がします。
ちなみに、shankedがひねり縞を指すという理解は、1790年代以降ウースターやカーフリーなどで導入された（おそらくフランスからの影響で）ひねり縞（スパイラル・フルート）が、このshanked（あるいはshankered）と呼ばれていることによります。このウースター等のひねり縞は、平らな（あるいは、やや凹面状の）幅広のひねり縞ですが、ダービーのシェイプでこれに比較的似ているのは、前回扱ったアカンサスの浮彫りのあるシェイプでしょう。しかし、ダービーのアカンサスの浮彫りのカップは、1770年代から製造されていますし、そもそもひねり縞だけでなく浮彫りまであるわけですし、さらに言えば、ひねりの方向が左右逆でもありますし、ウースター等でshankedと呼ばれていたものが、ダービーでも同義で呼ばれていたということにはならないのかもしれません。

(8) new shape
こういうのは困りますね。もう少しヒントが見つからないと。前回のnew embossedの調査でも見たとおり、例えnewと呼ばれていても、必ずしもその時点での新型という意味ではなかった点には留意が必要です。
(9) new embossed
前回に頑張って探してみたシェイプです。ちなみに、クリスティーズ・アーカイヴからは今のところ返事がなく、クリスティーズ本体に再度連絡してとりあえずのコンタクトは取れましたが、質問への回答が得られるかどうかは、いまだ分かりません。
(10) peacock pattern
前回、「パイナップル」の地模様の上に描かれた図柄が「ピーコック図柄」と呼ばれた可能性に言及しました。この点については、もう少し調べてみないといけません。
(11) bell-shape
上記(1)double shapeで言及した形です。1750〜60年代には、カップ下部が丸くふくらんだベル型カップが作られていましたが、そのシェイプは1770年代以降のコーヒーカップやティーカップでは見られないようです。よって、ここで言うベル・シェイプというのは、上部がふくらんだカップの形を指すのでしょう。少し引っかかるのは、上記(1)でご紹介した1787年のベッドフォード公爵からの注文に関する記録の中で、注文されたシェイプ（後にベル・シェイプと呼ばれている）はダービーの既存シェイプにはないが、1785年又は86年に作ったことがある、とされている点です。この1785年即売会カタログでベル・シェイプ（ここでの作品はブレックファースト・セットですが）と呼ばれているのは、ベッドフォード公爵のために特注で作ったベル・シェイプとは異なる形状ということなのでしょうか。
(12) Hamilton shape
このシェイプは、1786年〜1790年にかけて、ロンドン店舗の販売記録やリゴの手紙に何度も登場します（注３）。また、いくつかのヴァリエーションがあって、単純にHamilton Shapeとなっているものの他に、Hamilton Cups without handles, 同じく with handlesという記述もあり、取っ手ありとなしの両方があったようです。さらに複雑なのは、"Plain shanked, Hamilton shape"という形容もある点です。そうした記述を以下に全て書き出してみます。

- 1789年8月17日のリゴからデュズベリーへの手紙： The Saucers sent last week to the Hamilton Cups pattern No 86 are so much too large that I am afraid they will never sell together the person that looks out the ware for painting is very much to blame for doing it that ware for it hurts the sale of the goods when finished, at a great expense.

ハミルトン・シェイプは、これまでに議論されたことのある数少ないシェイプの一つですが、具体的にどのシェイプを指すのかはっきりとした結論は出ていません。平らな（あるいは、やや凹面状の）幅広の縦じまが入ったカップを指すと言われることが多く、Hamilton fluteという名称で呼ばれることも少なくありません。私もそういう認識でした。しかし、A.P. Ledgerは、表面が平らな、いわゆるビュート・シェイプのカップがハミルトン・シェイプと記録されている例があることから、ハミルトンというのは縞模様などを指すのではなくて、カップの基本的な形を指していると主張しました。すなわち、他窯でビュート・シェイプと呼ばれた（ダービーではこの名称は使われなかったようです）基本形が、ここで言うハミルトンであり、その基本形の上に縞模様が施されたりすることもあった、ということです（注４）。
これはかなり説得力のある主張です。これが正しいとすれば、上記の18世紀の記録にあるplain Hamilton shapeというのは、縞模様のない基本形を指すのだと考えることができます（plainでない単なるHamiltonが、全て縞模様があるシェイプだとは言えないかもしれませんが）。また、"Plain shanked, Hamilton shape"という、２つのシェイプが並列で書かれているものも、基本形の上に"plain shanked"模様が施されていると理解できるわけです（もちろん、基本のビュート・シェイプの上にplainなひねり縞がほどこされた、というものが具体的にどんなシェイプなのかは別問題として残りますが）。もう一つ、この説で残される課題は、ハミルトンというのがいわゆるビュート・シェイプのことだとした場合、上記(4)のplain shape（1789年6月3日のリゴの手紙には、Hamiltonとplain shapeが両方記載されています）というのはどんな形なのかという点です。ビュート・シェイプというのは、丸みを帯びた、とてもシンプルな形状ですが、これをplainと呼ばないで、別のどんなシェイプをplainと呼んだのでしょうか。
もう一点、このハミルトン・シェイプは、1785年3月の即売会カタログに登場していないという点にも留意する必要があります。これだけ網羅的なカタログにハミルトン・シェイプが登場しないということは、1785年3月にはまだこのシェイプは存在しなかったと考えられるのではないでしょうか。一方で、1786年9月以降の販売記録には、ハミルトン・シェイプは頻繁に登場します。すなわち、このシェイプは1785〜86年に新たに導入されたシェイプだと言うことができるかもしれません。
[とりあえずのまとめ]
今回は、1785年以降の記録に登場する具体的シェイプ名を洗い出してみました。実際の作例とマッチングできそうなものもありましたが、まだまだ分からないものもあります。ここまで調べてきて気がついたのは、記録の中には、そのカップに描かれた図柄番号が記されている例があります。特定のシェイプには特定の図柄が描かれたという可能性もあります。次回はこの点を追及してみようかと思います。
