Shrakrisabz

Shakrisabz was the home town of Timur. It is about 100 km south of Samarkand.

Ok-saray

Timur built a palace here of stunning grandiosity, called "Ok-saray", or "white palace". It was unfortunately destroyed, except for the gate in the picture above. It was said to be 300 meters long and 150 meters wide.

Ulug Bek Mosque

Ulug Bek, who was not only an astronomer but also a competent ruler, built a mosque in Shakrisabz.

This is an overview of the mosque complex. In the neighborhood is also a mausoleum where Timur's eldest son is buried.

This picture is of the ceiling of the Ulug Bek mosque.

This is a detail from inside the mosque.

Bazaar

We visited the bazaar in Shakrisabz. Ko and I both picked up nice Uzbeki-style robes, really cheap.
