MSM   Methyl Sulfonyl Methane   What’s it for?

It sounds so chemical...

... or so you may think if you see this word for the first time. Well, I thought so, then tried it, liked it and use it regularly now.

For a little background, check what a manufacturer says about MSM.

There are a number of research patents from the eighties that disclose usage and observed results. MSM is not patented as a substance. A natural substance cannot be patented. This is important, you don’t want any patented substance in your body.  Why?  Only chemical modifications and wholly new substances can be patented, such as drugs, and things that pass as food additives, such as MSG, aspartame and other. They are new, that is the problem. New substances even after mandatory testing may still be dangerous, if only because our bodies have not had time to evolve biological defenses. Thus we have medicines with side effects, many of which are patented.  (pun intended)

What a few hundred mg of MSM daily do for me

When I dissolve some on the tongue (it melts like nothing I knew before), I can wash down a gram of Vitamin C powder without the acid burning the tongue.  Without MSM, the sourness is unbearable and the tongue gets irritated.

Like many people, I get a red flush from 25mg Niacin taken (with other B vitamins) once a week after meal. After a week of MSM, the flush disappeared. Curious, I tried 50, then 100 mg Niacin: no more flush.

Old scars reappear, like a small cut on my finger from a broken bottle at age 12, a kitten scratch from age 9. This may mean the body finally has the right material to replace the emergency repair putty with normal (non-scar) tissue.

Eyesight without glasses seems to have improved slightly. If this continues, I gotta go measure for new lenses.

The beard grows faster, I almost need to shave in the evening.

Less buzz from the booze. I drink alcohol maybe 3-4 times a year and not much. My liver is relatively untrained. The other day, at a company outing I drank 5 glasses of red wine and a bit of whisky and - almost nothing. Amazing small bit of buzz, no hangover at all.  I wouldn’t drive a vehicle, the measured alcohol value might have been above the legal limit. Or maybe not. Those of you who have voluntary access to reliable measuring equiment: try it out. Imbibe a decent amount before you start any MSM, note the condition of food and drink, and read the alcohol value.  After a week or so on MSM, repeat. But don’t drive under the influence.

All this does not mean MSM is suitable to heal anything, it comes as just a nutritionally active sulfur. The body uses it, like vitamin C in many reactions involving proteins and amino acids. The effects of having enough of it appear to me healthy indeed.
